The England manager Questions Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
The England head coach shared his disappointment that the England team did not get stronger support from the home fans during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his team showcase their good form, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the contest. However, he was unhappy with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With limited training days to get ready against a organized team and we excelled,” Tuchel stated. “It could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved greater backing today.”
“I stand by my words. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a bit more support in phases where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Apart from potentially starting a fight with supporters, Tuchel also created controversy by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. Yet the move was justified by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, take lessons from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy said. “I wanted to assess our standing. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was taken off at the break after hitting a post and may miss out when the national team face their next opponents in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
