Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected call-up.
Performance Issues Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI side following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia seek a answer to their top-order woes.
Bowling Returns and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
