Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Attack Dies
A woman stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The victim, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response when she finished her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
