Chicago TV Reporter's Arrest in ICE Operation Called 'Disturbing and Horrifying', Attorneys Assert

Legal representatives acting for a journalist from the city of Chicago's local TV network who was temporarily detained by government officers last week characterize the event as "something that should concern and horrify each individual in this country".

Details of the Arrest

The journalist, a American national and station staff member, was arrested on Friday by government officers during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement action in a North Side Chicago area. Videos from the scene depict Brockman being forced to the ground by two agents before she is handcuffed and put in a vehicle.

At the time, a government spokesperson stated that Brockman "hurled items at an official vehicle" and was "placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer".

Subsequently that day, the television station confirmed that Brockman had been freed from detention and that no charges had been pressed against her.

Attorney's Response

In a statement issued by attorneys representing the journalist on earlier this week, her legal team challenged the government's account. They declared they "adamantly deny any claim that she attacked anyone" and that "She was the one who was physically attacked by federal agents on her way to work" on the date in question.

Her lawyers explain that at the moment of the arrest, the journalist was "not acting in any professional capacity as an employee for the station" but that she was just "walking to the bus stop as part of her daily travel when she was attacked by federal officers.

"The individual, who is a American citizen born in this country, was forcibly held on Foster Avenue," the release adds. "As this happened, bystanders on the street began recording the incident and inquired Ms Brockman her name."

The release indicates that she informed the onlookers her name and that she worked at WGN, in the hopes that "a person would inform her employer so colleagues would know that she would not be coming at work that day", her lawyers stated.

Consequences and Legal Action

According to her lawyers, Brockman was held in federal custody for about several hours before being released.

"The individual has not been accused with any offenses and she intends to pursue all legal avenues available to her to uphold her entitlements and ensure government accountability for their actions," the release adds.

"One attorney, a legal representative, commented in the release: "When equipped, masked, federal agents are snatching US citizens off the street as they travel to work and placing them in non-descript cars, you can only imagine what these officers must be prepared to do to our immigrant neighbors and individuals who dare to protest against them."
"The journalist was forced down, struck, restrained, and her pants were lowered revealing her uncovered skin," the lawyer stated. "Not anyone should be handled like that in this metropolis, in this nation or anywhere else in the globe."

Immigration authorities, the federal agency, and the border agency did not provide a prompt reply to requests for comment from the media.
